What you need (makes around 100 small cookie sticks)
all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and 1 egg
What you do
Mix 150g all-purpose flour, 40g sugar, 1/2t baking powder, 1/8t baking soda, and 1 egg (optional: 1T black sesame seeds).
Gradually add a little water and mix to form the dough.
Cover with a tea towel and let it rest at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Shape the dough into your desired size (I made them about 2-3 inches long and 1/4 inch thick, and it made around 100 pieces).
Heat the oil just enough to fry, then place the dough in the oil and fry slowly over low heat.
Once the dough starts to brown slightly, increase the heat to medium and fry until evenly golden brown.
After frying, coat with sugar.
Lab Notes
I made this after trying Ma Hwa cookies that my friend’s mom made, and they were so good! The traditional version is twisted, but I kept it simple and didn’t twist the dough.
I really enjoyed the hard, crispy, sweet snack. I’ve missed these!
They turned out a bit darker than I expected, so be mindful of the heat.
